General Comment cher encodes a product with an actin binding activity. It interacts genetically with Psn. Among findings on cher function, localisation of cher to nascent ring canals is necessary for the recruitment of actin filaments. cher may link filamentous actin to the plasma membrane to the ring canal.

Species: D. melanogaster
Mutation name: None
type: None
fertility: infertile - ovarian defect
Comment: Defects in cher affect ring canal morphology. An EMS mutation exhibits an arrest of ovarian development late in stage 10, nurse cell nuclei fail to be retained in the nurse cell complex. Mutations in cher disrupt actin filament organization and compromise membrane integrity during oocyte development, resulting in female sterility. Li et al. (1999) Defective in cytoplasm transport. Egg chambers of homozygous females have impaired cytoplasm transport from nurse cell to oocyte. Homozygous egg chambers lack the actin inner rim of the ring canals, although subcortical actin appears normal. The fusomes ares normal in the early germaria and develop into normal branched polyfusomes. Robinson et al (1997)
