Using DDC-4 as probe, a rat ovarian cDNA library was screened and Y81 clone 40 was found to be a full-length isolate (Wolf et al.,1997). Y81 clone 40 exhibits a high homology with the cysteine-rich domain (i.e. the ligand-binding domain) of the frizzled gene family originally defined as tissue polarity genes in Drosophila. The homology of Y81 clone 40 is most extensive with secreted frizzled relatives, the frzb subfamily.

Specific expression of Y81 in the ovarian corpus luteum undergoing programmed cell-death makes Y81 a good candidate as a mediator of stimuli leading to apoptosis and subsequent phagocytosis (Guo et al.,1998).
